  • In 2002, all the parties unanimously elected Kalam as the 11th President of India.

Kalam’s Tenure as President of India

  • On June 10, 2002, the NDA government proposed the name of DR Kalam for Presidential post and all parties unanimously elected him as the President of India; he succeeded K .R. Narayanan to become the 11th president of India.
  • Dr. Kalam served as the President of India from July 25, 2002, to July 25, 2007. He won the elections fair and square by securing around 922,884 votes, thus defeating his opponent Lakshmi Sehgal.
  • He was the first scientist to reside in the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • Due to his tremendous work and his affinity towards students, he has affectionally been called the People’s President.
  • Dr. Kalam was the third President of India to have received the prestigious Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour in India.
  • Like most of his predecessors, he was also criticized due to some difficult decisions he had to take while serving as president of the country. He received most criticism for his inaction to decide the fate of 20 mercy petitions out of 21, including that of the Kashmiri Terrorist Afzal Guru, who was convicted for the Parliament attacks in December 2001.

Life After the Presidency

After serving as President of India, Dr. Kalam chose an academic career by becoming a visiting professor at the IIM Shillong, IIM Ahmedabad, and IIM Indore. He also served as an Honorary fellow for the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

He also served as the chancellor at the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology; Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Anna University and an adjunct at many other academic and research institutions across India.

On July 27, 2015, Dr. Abdul Kalam while delivering a lecture at IIM Shillong, suffered a heart attack; when his condition became critical, he was shifted to Bethany Hospital where he died of cardiac arrest.
